Failed to notify 'DBA' via email

We have some SQL jobs those run on a schedule basis. These jobs are setup to
notify us via email in case of job fails. However, Some time we get this
error "Failed to notify 'DBA' via email." Initially I thought it may be b/c
of mail server was not available but our exchnage server admin has looked at
exchange logs and not found any thing at that time. I also looked at the SQL
server logs and did not find any issues. My question is: is there any thing
can go wrong in the SQL server that can cause this probelm?
Help is appreciated.
Thanks,
MohMoh,
FWIW - SQL Server MAPI will only wait a certain amount of time to deliver a
message. If it cannot get out, then the mail will 'fail' even though
Exchange is up and running and healthy. It might be Exchange, networking,
domain issues, etc. that cause the problem.
If you Google on "sql mail Failed to notify" you will see a few comments on
this, without any real help that I could find.
(Unless xp_smtp_sendmail would work for you.)

Generally I find if you don't absolutely need to use Exchange, setup a local
SMTP server right on teh SQL box and send email through that directly.
Eliminates timeouts, etc.

Failed to decrypt XML node "DTS:Password"

Hi!
I made an SSIS package and it runs fine on my workstation, but it fails when I run it on the SQL Server.
I'm using an ODBC connection and when I run the package, I get the error message:
"Login failed. Check for valid user ID, server name or password".
I tried to load the project in Visual Studio on the Server and got the error message above:
Failed to decrypt XML node "DTS:Password"
How can I set up the permissions for decrypting the password?

Thanks for any help!

The problem is that you have the ProtectionLevel set to "EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey". This means the package can be executed only by the user that created the package and on the machine that it was created. (unless you use a domain account and use machines in the same domain)

If you import the package on your server I recomend to change the ProtectionLevel to "EncryptSensitiveWithPassword" - will ecnrypt sensitive information like passwords - or if you store the package on SqlServer you can use "Rely on server storageand rolse for access control" - this means that the package will be stored unencrypted on the SQL Server.

The package can be stored unencrypted ONLY in the SQL Server.

|||Thanks for the explanation!
I tried to use the last option"Rely on server storageand rolse for access control", however it causes a lot of error messages in the Business Intelligence Studio and I can not create a build with a deployment manifest. The help sais, this option is not accessible from Visual Studio, but I can not figure out, how to use it.
Can you tell me, how I can use it?
|||

Are you saving the package on a SQL Server or to a file? You can use ServerStorage ONLY if you save the package on SQL Server

To save a package from BIDS directly to SQL Server use File-> "Save Copy of <package_name>.dtsx As..." and in the dialogs that appears you can specify a SQL Server

If you want to create a deployment manifest encrypt with a passord and when you run the Deployment wizard and specify the destination to be a SQL Server the you can choose the "Rely on server storage and role for access control".

failed to connect to the server

When I have a subscription built for a report it runs at the time expected, but the report send via e-mail fails. I can run the report from a client workstation just fine. I can also run it from the admin tool fine too, it just will not run as part of a subscription. The full context of the error message is as follows:

Failure sending mail: The transport failed to connect to the server

This is not my first Reporting services report, but I am trying to replace all Crystal reports with Reporting services reports and this functionality is greatly needed.

Thanks! - Eric-

The error is telling you the RS server cannot connect to the Mail server. Make sure that the unattended execution account is setup and is a user that has access to the mail server.

Failed to connect to server - Need expert advise

Hello All,
We use MSDE SP3a and are having a strange problem.
We have an ADO-based application that fails depending on the domain
that we use to login to the machine. It works if I login to DOMAIN_A
but it fails to connect to the server if I am physically logged in into
the DOMAIN_B. In both cases the server and the database is local. The
message that I get is the usual:
Error Number: 80004005 [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL
Server does not exist or access denied.
I could not find any other errors in the event viewer, logs, etc.
Any help or ideas would be deeply appreciated as I ran out of them...
Thanks

How are you connecting ot the server Windows Authentication or SQL
Server Authentication ?

Failed installation to cluster

I have a 2 node cluster on which I am trying to install a
virtual SQL Server.
I am able to complete the setup process, but the
installation fails after checking the cluster resources.
In the application log I see that the ports have
automatically been disabled (as I'm installing SQL from a
CD without sp3a as yet) and the errors that follow show
that connections to the SQL Server were unable to be made.
Is there a switch for the install to stop the disabling of
ports? Has anyone else seen this issue?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Simon
Here is the workaround you need.
PRB: Installation of a Named Instance of SQL Server 2000 Virtual Server on a
Windows 2003-Based Cluster Fails

Once you install SP3a you can remove the alias.

|||You probably noticed this but you cannot disable named pipes if you want to
install on Windows 2003, because setup needs named pipes to work.

PLEASE Help.

Rich

Have you had previous versions of SQL 2005 installed on the same computer? Which versions?|||No its a clean install of Windows 2003 Sp1 and its not a DC. Crazy.|||

Moving to the setup forum.

Hi Rich,

The error code looks like this:

# for decimal 5 / hex 0x5
ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED winerror.h
# Access is denied.

Are you running with Admin privileges when trying to install the SQL product?

|||any updates?|||

Fin,

Thanks for asking. I decided to wipe the server clean, install 2003 and all the updates. Then try the express install. This time it worked.

Thank,

Rich

Fail to hide the restart dialog after installed MSDE

Hi,
I want to hide the restart dialog after installed MSDE. I
use the follow command:
setup /settings "setup.ini" /qb
But, the result fails. The restart dialog is also
prompted. Is my command wrong? How to do it?
Thanks.
Using /qn instead of /qb did the trick for me. Do you only get the restart
dialog, or do you get other dialogs as well? I ran mine without a settings
file, just with all the parameters on the command prompt.

|||A solution I saw on another newsgroup was to include the following switch:
REBOOTPROMPT=Suppress
(I haven't had chance to try it yet)

Fail to call child package

Have a parent package that calls many child packages (over 30) for a daily data warehouse update. On any given day, it randomly fails to call a child package with the following error:

Error 0x800706BE while preparing to load the package. The remote procedure call failed.

Its not failing the same package each day. I need a better explanation of this error message.

Environment: SQL2005 Enterprise Dec2005 RTM on Itanium64 with Windows DataCenter.

Are all the Execute Package tasks in the parent package configured identically? Where are the child packages stored?|||Yes, all Exec Package tasks are set up the same. All packages are stored in MSDB on our DataWarehouse server. Because we have such a large volume of packages (200), we are using folders to separate the packages. The parent package calls children in the Dimensions and various other folders. The call failures span many of the children folders, so there doesn't seem to be a pattern.

Faiied Query

I am running SQL Server 2005 Express on the backend and Access 2000 on the front end.
This query fails and it is not clear why?

SELECT DISTINCTROW tblTutoringHours.[Site ID] AS Expr1, tblTutoringHours.[Student ID] AS Expr2, Sum(tblTutoringHours.Hours) AS [Tutoring Hours], Min(tblTutoringHours.Level) AS [Start Level], Max(tblTutoringHours.Level) AS [End Level], [End Level]-[Start Level] AS Gain, Max([Date Graduated] Is Not Null)*(-1) AS GainGrad, Max([Drop ID]=8)*(-1) AS GainPromoted
FROM tblSites, tblStudents, tblTutoringHours
WHERE ((([tblSites].[Database Totals])=Yes))
GROUP BY tblTutoringHours.[Site ID], tblTutoringHours.[Student ID]
HAVING (((Sum([tblTutoringHours].[Hours]))>0))
WITH OWNERACCESS OPTION;

Doesn't look like you have all of the non-aggregate fields in the GROUP BY statement.|||

This calculated column contains columns that are not aggregrated and NOT in the GROUP BY:

[End Level]-[Start Level] AS Gain

This just won't work as written:

Max([Date Graduated] Is Not Null)*(-1) AS GainGrad

It could be revised as:

max( isnull( [Date Graduated], 0 ) * (-1) AS GainGrad
